ACHTUS Statement on Recent Racist Violence
ACHTUS has a long–standing and consistent policy of speaking out against racial injustice and its subtle imbrication in the fabric of U.S.A. social life. For example, after the August 2017 events in Charlottesville Va., the Board of ACHTUS responded, together with the Black Catholic Theological Symposium, with a statement on racist hate crimes in the U.S.A. The events that have transpired since the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 sadly confirm the pattern of systematic violence that we decried just a few years ago. Today we are moved by both profound lament and an equally deep conviction to say more about the structural sin of racism that grips our nation.
In solidarity with their families and loved ones, we mourn the loss of the lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and other victims of racial injustice and violence in our midst and across the globe. Their deaths must translate into a program of education and action that will eliminate race–based violence and inequality and bring healing to our troubled nation. We pray that our leaders in the nation, in our local communities, and especially in our Church speak forthrightly against the structures of racism and strive to dismantle them. We denounce the current pattern of cyclical violence fomented by leaders who exploit racial tensions in order to sow strife and division, and we call for reforms in law enforcement and in the judicial system that eliminate the unjust targeting of black and brown bodies.
“I can’t breathe.” These words, among George Floyd’s last, remind us of the close interconnection between breath and life. This makes the wanton taking of breath not just a criminal act, but a violation of the sacredness of life itself. We call upon our membership and the entire polity of this nation to find solutions to the problem of racial injustice and to work assiduously to put flesh and bones on the dreams of equality and human dignity, so that people of all races and ethnicities can live, breathe, and flourish today.

ACHTUS tiene una política consistente y de larga tradición de pronunciarse en contra de la injusticia racial y su sutil imbricación en el tejido de la vida social de los EEUU. Por ejemplo, después de los eventos de agosto de 2017 en Charlottesville, Virginia, la Mesa Directiva de ACHTUS respondió, junto con el Simposio Teológico Católico Negro (Black Catholic Theological Symposium), con una declaración sobre los crímenes de odio en los EEUU.* Los acontecimientos que han ocurrido desde el asesinato de George Floyd el 25 de mayo de 2020 lamentablemente confirman el patrón de violencia sistémica que denunciamos hace solo unos años atrás. Hoy tanto el lamento profundo como la intensa convicción nos conmueven a decir más sobre el pecado estructural del racismo que afecta a nuestra nación.
En solidaridad con sus familiares y seres queridos, lamentamos la pérdida de las vidas de George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade y otras víctimas de la injusticia racial y de la violencia en nuestro entorno y en el mundo entero. Que sus muertes se transformen en programas educativos y en acciones que eliminen la violencia por motivos raciales y por la desigualdad, y que traigan sanación a nuestra atribulada nación. Oramos para que los líderes de nuestra nación, de nuestras comunidades locales y especialmente de nuestra Iglesia se pronuncien francamente en contra de las estructuras de racismo y se esfuercen por desmantelarlas. Denunciamos el patrón actual de violencia cíclica fomentada por líderes que explotan las tensiones raciales para sembrar enfrentamientos y divisiones, y exigimos reformas de agencias policíacas y del sistema judicial que detengan los ataques injustos a cuerpos negros y morenos.
“No puedo respirar”. Estas palabras, de las últimas de George Floyd, nos recuerdan la estrecha conexión entre la respiración y la vida. Esto hace que privar del aliento deliberadamente no sea solo un acto criminal, sino una violación de la sacralidad de la vida misma. Hacemos un llamado a nuestra membresía y a toda la organización política de esta nación a encontrar soluciones al problema de injusticia racial y a trabajar con asiduidad para ampliar los sueños de igualdad y dignidad humana, a que personas de todas las razas y etnias puedan vivir, respirar y prosperar hoy.
